2025 U. S. Military Health Report: Mental Health and Injuries Dominate Care Needs

In 2025, mental health issues took up over half of all hospital days for active duty service members. Specifically, 51 percent of inpatient care time was spent treating conditions related to psychological well-being. This shows how critical mental health support is within the military healthcare system.

Outpatient visits paint a different but equally telling picture. Just five medical conditions accounted for one-third of all clinic appointments. These top conditions likely include common injuries or chronic issues that require frequent check-ups but not overnight stays.

The study uses a classification system from the Global Burden of Disease project to measure health impacts across the military population. Three main areas—injuries, mental health disorders, and musculoskeletal problems—made up almost all healthcare interactions. These categories drive both routine visits and hospital stays, highlighting their importance in military health planning.

Researchers analyzed data from medical records to track how illnesses and injuries affect service members’ daily lives and long-term health. The findings help shape policies on prevention, treatment, and resource allocation for those serving in the armed forces.
