In a strange turn of events, a photo of a Brazilian woman has become the center of an election fraud controversy in India. The photo, taken in 2017 by photographer Matheus Ferrero, ended up being used in voter records for last year's elections. The woman in the photo, Larissa Nery, is now a hairdresser in Brazil and has no connection to India or its elections.
The issue came to light when Rahul Gandhi, an opposition politician in India's Haryana state, accused the government of election fraud. He showed Nery's photo during a press conference, asking how it was possible that the same woman voted 22 times in the elections. The photo was used in voter records in 10 different electoral sections, which Gandhi argues points to a centralized operation of election fraud.
Ferrero, the photographer, has been overwhelmed by the attention and has had to delete his online presence. He took the photo as practice and uploaded it to various stock photo sites, including Unsplash. He has since removed the photo from Unsplash. Both Ferrero and Nery are confused about how their photo ended up in this controversy.
Nery expressed her shock and confusion in an interview, saying that she was just a young girl in the photo and has no idea how it ended up being used in an Indian election. She also mentioned that her photo was being used to make her look Indian, which is not the case.
The accusations have been met with skepticism by the ruling party. Amit Malviya, head of the prime minister's information technology and social networks unit, described the accusations as imaginative on X, formerly Twitter.
It's important to note that there is no evidence that Ferrero or Nery had anything to do with the alleged election fraud. They have been caught up in a whirlwind of chaos halfway across the globe, which is certainly not what someone expects to happen when they publish portraits on a stock photo site.
This incident raises questions about the security and verification processes of voter records in India. It also highlights the potential consequences of using stock photos and the importance of understanding how they can be used.
