For 468 long days, families of hostages have been living in darkness. But now, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas promises a sliver of light. The deal, starting Jan. 19 for 42 days, could free 33 of the 98 hostages. The agonizing wait for the remaining families continues. Each day they ask, “Will my loved one's name appear on the list? Are they still alive? ” These are real people—kids, parents, grandparents—each suffering unbearably. Among them are Americans like Edan Alexander and Keith Siegel, whose families have been tirelessly fighting for their release. The suffering of the hostages is beyond imagination. Held in cold tunnels, they endure abuse and lack basic needs. In August, the tragic news of American Hersh Goldberg-Polin's murder, who was set to be released, highlighted the urgency. Families of the deceased hope their remains are returned with dignity. Abigail Mor Edan's release last year brought a ray of hope, reminding us of the power of persistence and unity. The U. S. president's commitment and the collaboration between his team and the incoming administration have been crucial. International cooperation and the political will of Israel and Hamas made this ceasefire possible. But the work is far from over. We must hold all parties accountable to complete the deal and bring all hostages home.
