In a significant move, authorities have recently taken down a huge health care fraud operation. Over 320 people were charged, and nearly $15 billion in false claims were uncovered. This is the biggest crackdown of its kind in history. The operation was a joint effort between state and federal prosecutors. They seized over $245 million in cash, luxury items, and even cryptocurrency. Officials warn that criminal networks from different countries are targeting the U. S. health care system. Matthew Galeotti, a leader in the Justice Department, spoke about the impact of these crimes. He said that the fraudsters are not just stealing money; they are taking from taxpayers who fund these essential programs. The $14. 6 billion in alleged fraud is more than double the previous record. Nearly 100 licensed medical professionals were charged, including 25 doctors. The government reported $2. 9 billion in actual losses. One of the biggest schemes involved $10 billion in fraudulent urinary catheter claims. Authorities say this shows how sophisticated these criminal operations have become. The scheme involved stolen identities and personal information of over one million Americans. Nineteen defendants were charged in this part of the investigation, known as Operation Gold Rush. Four people were arrested in Estonia, and seven were caught at U. S. airports and the Mexican border. Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, emphasized the seriousness of these crimes. He stated that these are not small-time operations but organized syndicates designed to harm America.
