A comet from another star system has been making headlines. It's called 3I/ATLAS, and it's the third such visitor we've spotted. It's not a spaceship, despite what some people might think. Scientists are still figuring out what makes this comet tick. When 3I/ATLAS got close to the sun, it started to show off. Comets usually get a tail and a glowing halo when they're near the sun. This one did too, but it also had some surprises. For one, it's releasing a lot of carbon dioxide, which is unusual. Normally, comets are mostly water ice, but this one seems to have more carbon dioxide than water. Scientists think it might have a crust on its surface that's trapping the water inside. Another strange thing about 3I/ATLAS is that it's releasing metals like nickel and iron. These metals usually need a lot of heat to turn into gas, so scientists are puzzled about how this comet is doing it. One idea is that the metals are mixed with some special chemicals that make them more likely to vaporize. We don't know exactly where 3I/ATLAS comes from, but some scientists think it might be very old, maybe even as old as eight billion years. It's also moving really fast, and it's getting faster as it gets closer to the sun. Some people have wondered if 3I/ATLAS is an alien spaceship, but scientists say that's not true. It's just a comet, and it's not sending out any strange radio signals. It did have a weird tail that was pointing towards the sun for a while, but that's not unusual for comets. Scientists are still learning about 3I/ATLAS, and they'll be watching it closely as it passes through our solar system. It's closest approach to Earth will be in December, but it will still be really far away.
