A New Look for a Half‑Century Old Science Hub
Baltimore, MD, USASun Jun 14 2026
The Maryland Science Center is set to refresh its entrance at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, celebrating 50 years of discovery. The event began with a groundbreaking ceremony that marked the end of a $15. 2 million fundraising drive and the museum’s milestone anniversary. Leaders from state government, local officials, business sponsors, and community donors gathered to support the project.
The new design will replace the old brick stairs with a gentle slope and a green lawn planted with native species. A shade canopy will provide comfort for visitors, while improved water‑management systems aim to protect the Chesapeake Bay. The iconic “Easy Landing” sculpture from 1978 will stay, surrounded by fresh landscaping.
Construction is slated to start in the fall of 2026, after the busy summer season. The $2 million renovation is funded by Maryland’s capital improvement grants and crafted by the Baltimore firm Mahan Rykiel. The center’s president, Mark Potter, highlighted how the redesign reflects the institution’s ongoing dedication to sustainability and visitor experience.
The day of the ceremony was also a full celebration. For one day, admission prices returned to those charged in 1976: $1 for children, $2. 50 for adults and $1. 50 for seniors. Live demos, hands‑on activities, and a noon cake added to the festivities.
This transformation marks a new chapter for the science center while honoring its legacy of welcoming explorers and curious minds since 1976.
