A school in Altoona had to empty out early Friday because of a gas smell in one of its classrooms. The Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center quickly got to work, calling in the fire department and the gas company to check things out. By 10 a. m. , the experts gave the all-clear, and everyone could go back inside.
While no one was seriously hurt, about 20 students said they had headaches. Nurses checked them out, and luckily, no one needed to go to the hospital. One staff member did go to the hospital just to be safe, but they were released soon after.
The school made sure to let all the parents know what was going on, especially those with kids who felt sick. They also canceled afternoon classes just to be extra careful. The gas company fixed the problem, and the school was back to normal the next day.
The school's director, Nicole Zernick, thanked everyone for staying calm and working together. She also reminded everyone that keeping students and staff safe is always the top priority.
Students who were at the Altoona Area High School during the scare were sent back to their regular schools. By the end of the day, everything was under control, and the school was ready to welcome everyone back.
