Katelyn Jonozzo, a 31-year-old marathon runner, was always health-conscious. She started gymnastics at a young age and later became a dedicated marathon runner. In 2024, she qualified for the Boston Marathon, excited to run it in 2025.
But her plans took a dramatic turn in February when she experienced severe stomach pain and flu-like symptoms. She initially thought it was just a stomach bug. However, her friends convinced her to go to the emergency room.
Doctors found a three-inch tumor in her colon, which was about to rupture. She underwent emergency surgery to remove part of her colon and had a colostomy bag installed. The diagnosis was stage 3 colon cancer, with secondary cancer in her abdomen.
Jonozzo was shocked. She had no warning signs. How could she have a tumor and still run marathons? Her doctor estimated the tumor had been growing for about a decade.
After surgery, she started chemotherapy. The treatments were tough. She lost her hair, taste, and sensation in her hands and feet. But she adapted, finding new ways to stay active and positive.
She joined support groups and connected with other young cancer patients. This helped her embrace her colostomy bag and regain confidence. She even started advocating for cancer awareness, finding a new passion.
After seven months of treatment, she was declared cancer-free. She had her colostomy reversed and is now eager to return to her old routine. She plans to run three marathons in 2026, hoping to re-qualify for the Boston Marathon.
Jonozzo sees her cancer experience as a turning point. It made her more present and confident. She believes it was one of the best things that ever happened to her.
