A South Carolina politician lost her race after making waves

South Carolina, USASun Jun 14 2026
Nancy Mace, a U. S. representative from South Carolina, got only 12% of the vote in the June 9 Republican primary for governor. That wasn’t even enough for second place. The two candidates moving forward are Pamela Evette, who had former President Trump’s support, and Alan Wilson, the state’s top lawyer. Mace thinks her push to release Jeffrey Epstein’s court records hurt her chances. She was one of four Republicans who forced the Justice Department to hand over the files. In her speech after losing, she said, "As a survivor, I chose to stand on principle and stand against the Epstein cover-up. I chose to stand against child rapists. " But blaming her loss only on that effort misses the bigger picture. Mace spent years stirring up drama instead of solving problems for South Carolina. After winning her seat in 2020 by flipping a Democratic district, she quickly shifted far to the right. She even called Trump a "father figure, " earning a label from Politico as "the most Donald Trump-like figure in American politics not named Donald Trump. "
Her record shows little for her voters. Instead of holding town halls, she skipped events she called organized by "left-wing extremists. " She later called her own constituents "nasty" and "evil" while claiming they ignored real needs. She once accused a foster care advocate of "physically accosting" her during a handshake. At an airport, she called police officers "incompetent. " Mace also spent time on flashy bills targeting immigrants and transgender people. One bill would have banned non-natural-born citizens from holding elected office. Another proposed forcing immigrants through "assimilation" tests. She pushed a federal bathroom bill that would require people to use facilities matching their birth sex. Her one moment in the spotlight came from the Epstein files. Pushing for their release was the right move, and she deserves credit for it. But that good deed was drowned out by years of heat over more controversial fights. In the end, voters saw through her empty showmanship. They wanted someone focused on real issues like jobs, housing, and making life cheaper—not someone chasing fame while attacking minority groups.
