Meet a 28-year-old man from Timor-Leste who shocked doctors with a rare brain infection. This infection, called neurocysticercosis, is caused by a tiny worm called Taenia solium. It's usually found in places where pigs are raised and pork is eaten a lot. But Timor-Leste isn't one of those places, so this case was a big surprise.
The man had been having seizures after headaches, and he was admitted to the hospital on June 15, 2020. Doctors did a lot of tests, including taking pictures of his brain. They found several strange-looking lumps that hinted at neurocysticercosis.
Doctors started treating him with some medicines: praziquantel, prednisolone, and levetiracetam. These helped for a while, but the symptoms came back after five months. So, the doctors had to give him more treatment.
This weird case shows that doctors need to be extra careful when patients come from places where this infection isn't common. It also shows that this infection can be tricky to manage because it can change over time.
There are global health efforts to keep a better eye on this infection, which can help us learn more about neurocysticercosis and how to deal with it.
