A Tale of Misused Funds: Two Activists Face Big Consequences

Monica Cannon‑Grant, a 44‑year‑old activist in Boston, was found to have taken more than $100, 000 from COVID relief and other donations meant for community help. She used the money to pay for her own trips, cars and meals instead of supporting those she promised. In January, a federal judge gave her no jail time but ordered six months of home confinement, four years of probation, 100 hours of community work and a repayment of $106, 003. A later court order added another $224, 063 that she must return.
The amounts come from money diverted from her own nonprofit, Violence in Boston, pandemic unemployment benefits, and rental assistance that were meant for people in need. Prosecutors say she and her husband spent the funds on vacations, car rentals and fine dining while raising more than $1 million for the charity. She is not alone. In Oklahoma, another BLM leader, Tashella Sheri Amore Dickerson, was indicted on 25 counts of fraud and money laundering. She allegedly took $5. 6 million raised for the movement, funneling about $3. 5 million to her personal accounts and buying vacation homes, shopping sprees and food for herself. Both cases show how powerful people can misuse charitable money. Courts are now demanding that the funds be returned and that those who abuse public trust face serious penalties.
