A Teen's Instagram Posts Revealed His Life Inside a Mexican Cartel

Social media painted a clear picture of how a teenager went from playing soccer to carrying a gun for a drug gang. Jesus Sandoval was only fifteen years old when he became a bodyguard for his uncle, one of the most powerful cartel bosses in the Mexican state of Michoacan. He did not hide from the internet either. The teen ran two Instagram accounts where he posted pictures of weapons and other gang members standing around with rifles.

Military forces were hunting his uncle, Luis Enrique Barragan Chavez, also known as R5 or El Guicho. The raid happened at a ranch close to Tocumbo, Michoacan. R5 had taken charge of the criminal group called Cartel De Los Reyes after another leader got arrested. When soldiers tried to move in and make arrests, gunfire broke out. Both R5 and his nephew died in that exchange.

Sandoval went by the nickname Chuchito Nini online. His accounts gave a two-year window into his transformation. Earlier posts showed him as a regular kid kicking a ball around. Later pictures showed him holding guns and hanging out at cockfights. The accounts also revealed family connections. His brother Antonio held a high-ranking position in the same criminal organization, going by the name Tercer Elemento.

This situation in Michoacan is not new. Local cartels have been pulling young people into their operations for years. Back in 2020, another cartel boss paid children in his town to stand guard at entrances to town. He used them as human shields against rivals or police. Mexican authorities have done very little to stop these practices.
