AI Industry Fails to Sell Its Promise

Sam Altman says the AI industry is doing a bad job of explaining its technology. He warns that this failure leaves developers open to a growing backlash. He added that people become afraid when they think AI leaders may not want them to have more power.

Data Center Watch reports that at least seventy‑five data center projects worth about one hundred thirty billion dollars were blocked or delayed by local opposition in the first three months of the year. This number is close to the total for all of 2025, and it involves American sites. The industry has been running a charm offensive to win support for these projects.

In Europe the obstacle is not public sentiment but the power grid. Denmark’s operator Energinet paused new grid connections in March. It had roughly sixty gigawatts of queued projects against a national peak demand of about seven gigawatts. At the start of the year Denmark had 398 megawatts of data center capacity. Another 208 megawatts were under construction. The pause will last three months while new prioritization rules are drafted. Since 2024 any data center with at least 500 kilowatts of installed power must report its energy and sustainability performance to a European database. New legislation this year will require centers to meet energy, water and circularity standards to receive public support.
