'AI Races Ahead: The Public Wants Rules, Congress Must Listen'
Washington D.C., USAWed May 20 2026
The Vermont senator said that most people are worried about how fast AI is growing. A recent survey found that 70 percent of Americans think it’s moving too quickly and that many fear whole jobs could disappear. The same poll said 97 percent want rules to keep AI safe.
Senator Sanders told the nation that it might be time for lawmakers, not just rich investors, to step in. He called on Congress to hear what ordinary people are saying and put regulations in place.
Other studies echo these worries. A Blue Rose Research survey said 77 percent of people are scared that AI could eliminate entire industries. A Gallup poll for the Special Competitive Studies Project found bipartisan support for safety rules on AI.
Meanwhile, the Trump team is looking at new ways to control powerful AI tools. The National Economic Council says they might use a process similar to the FDA’s drug approval system. This would be a big change from Trump’s earlier push for rapid AI growth, which included rolling back safety rules that required developers to test and report on their models.
The shift comes as more people raise concerns about jobs, privacy, mental health and the environment. The President is now under pressure to balance innovation with protection.
