AI Threats Water Systems: Experts Warn of Cyber Risk

Walsh works as chief technology officer for government and critical infrastructure at his security firm. He explains that AI makes attacks move much faster than defenders can fix them. Geopolitical tension and rapid AI progress have made this threat more urgent than ever before. Many water and wastewater systems run on old technology and lack enough money or staff to protect themselves.

If someone breaks into these systems, they could shut off clean water for people. That would hurt farms, hospitals and everyday life. The damage might spread beyond just turning off taps. Smaller towns face the biggest risk because they have the fewest resources to respond quickly when disaster strikes.
