Albuquerque Journal reshuffles sports and photo leadership
The newspaper recently reorganized its sports and photo units. Taylor Hood now runs the day‑to‑day work of the sports desk. Geoff Grammer stays on as the public face of sports coverage. Lucas Peerman steps back from daily sports duties to concentrate on expanding the paper’s digital audience. He will team up with Hood during the transition and also work with Audience Editor Rachel Berry. His new title is AME/Digital, reflecting the shift toward online growth.
Publisher Bill Lang has reiterated his support for print while pushing the paper forward online. The Lang family has owned the Journal for over a century and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Digital metrics show strong momentum: more than 300,000 likes across social platforms and a projected 100 million Facebook views in 2026. The print run remains solid, with roughly one million copies printed each month.
Hood brings a wealth of newsroom experience to his new role. He previously edited The Taos News and Albuquerque The Magazine and served as an assistant editor at the Rio Rancho Observer, a paper owned by the Journal. His journey began as an agate clerk, where he learned how to compile stats and create box scores. That behind‑the‑scenes foundation helped shape his attention to detail and organization.
Grammer continues to be a recognizable voice for the paper. He remains the primary reporter for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team and contributes a weekly Monday column. His podcast, live election‑night broadcasts and extensive travel coverage have made him a go‑to source for readers. While Hood works behind the scenes, Grammer is the journalist readers see and hear most often.
