Ancient Bengal Coins Dataset Powers New AI Research

Historical money from Bengal reveals much about past societies. These tiny metal discs contain clues about political power, economic systems, and cultural habits in eastern South Asia. For centuries, scholars faced huge obstacles when trying to read these objects. Many varieties remain scarce, their designs confusing, and most are tucked away in private collections or sold through exclusive auction houses.

This study breaks those barriers by building a fresh digital archive. The team compiled more than two thousand seven hundred high-quality images of ancient coins. Each photo received detailed tags describing its design, symbols, and type. The collection spans nearly a millennium, covering the period from the fifth century BCE to the tenth century CE. It includes four distinct styles: Vanga Janapada, Gauda, Harikela, and Samatata. The set tracks the shift from simple punch-marked pieces to richer gold and silver coins during later eras.

All images were sourced from reputable places like authenticated private owners and authorized auction houses. Careful experts cross-referenced every coin against established numismatic works and professional records. This rigorous verification guarantees reliability. The finished dataset serves as a common reference point for future work in archaeology, numismatics, history, and artificial intelligence. By providing a clean, standardized benchmark, researchers can now train smarter machines to learn from ancient metal money.
