You might have heard that another person from New Hampshire has died due to Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). This is the second death this year and the fifth human case. The person who passed away was an adult from Danville, which is close to where the first death happened in Hampstead. All these cases occurred in August, so it's not a new spread of the disease.
Health officials are reminding people that even though the weather is getting cooler and mosquito activity is decreasing, there’s still some risk as long as mosquitos are around. New Hampshire hasn't had any EEE cases in humans for over ten years. The virus can be deadly—about 30% of those infected die, and survivors may face neurological issues. There's no cure, but you can protect yourself by avoiding mosquito bites.
Our neighboring state, Massachusetts, has also reported four EEE cases this year. They’re not sharing details about deaths to protect patient privacy.
