Art Market Buzz: Who Might Come Out On Top?

World Art MarketWed Sep 02 2026

People are wondering which artist will lead the auction sales this season. Many feel that Andy Warhol is unlikely to reach that top level. On the other hand, Pablo Picasso looks like a strong candidate to hit that mark. Most think Jean-Michel Basquiat will stay below that high point.

When it comes to new kinds of work, the idea of an AI piece breaking into a major auction does not look promising. Likewise, the chance that China will become the leading hub for art trades seems slim. For the Turner Prize, the buzz around Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, and Marguerite Humeau is low; few expect any of them to take home the award.

Looking at the bigger picture, expectations are that total art sales will not reach the huge target set for the period. Still, there is a lean toward believing that a single work could fetch a big amount before the year ends. The Salvator Mundi is not expected to be shown publicly by then. However, there is some optimism that Banksy might add a fresh street piece before the year's close.
