The annual Game Awards, often referred to as the Oscars of the video game industry, had a big surprise this year. The playful sci-fi adventure game, "Astro Bot, " stole the show. This family-friendly game, about a tiny space robot's escapades, was crowned the Game of the Year 2024. It also took home trophies for "Best Family Game, " "Best Game Direction, " and "Best Action/Adventure Game. " Developed by the Japanese studio Team Asobi, which is owned by Sony, the game has sold over 1. 5 million copies. Nicolas Doucet, the French chief of Team Asobi, praised his team for focusing on the user experience. "It's all about the kids, " he said, emphasizing the privilege of creating a game that could be a child's first gaming experience. As video games gain more mainstream attention, The Game Awards have become the most prestigious event for game developers. Last year's ceremony was streamed 118 million times globally, overshadowing the movie industry's Academy Awards, which had around 19 million viewers. Another major winner was "Metaphor: ReFantazio, " a medieval fantasy game produced by Japanese studio Atlus and published by Sega. It won "Best Role-Playing Game" and "Best Narrative. " The poker game "Balatro" also shone, winning "Best Mobile Game" and "Best Independent Game. " The event, hosted by Geoff Keighley, featured celebrities like Harrison Ford and Snoop Dogg. It also unveiled new games, such as "Intergalactic" by Naughty Dog, the creators of "The Last of Us. " Josef Fares, who won the top award in 2021 with "It Takes Two, " announced his new game, "Split Fiction. " Keighley also addressed the industry's challenges, noting that over 34, 000 jobs have been lost in the past three years. "You can't make great games without great people, " he said, highlighting the impact of these layoffs.
