Baby Tiger Gets Goat Parasite From Dirty Bedding

A tiny Bengal tiger cub at an Indonesian safari park got sick with bad diarrhea. Vets could not figure out why at first. They tested the cub's poop and found a surprise. The parasite inside was a type usually seen in goats, not meat-eating cats. This was very odd for a tiger.

Scientists looked at the sample under a microscope. They saw tiny eggs with four parts inside. The shapes and sizes were all different. This hinted at more than one kind of parasite. DNA testing confirmed one type matched a goat parasite called Eimeria. Other eggs looked like three more goat types. One was unknown.

How did a tiger get goat germs? The park reused old bedding from herbivore pens. Those tough parasite eggs can survive strong cleaners. They likely stuck around and infected the cub. This kind of jump from prey animals to predators is rare. Experts still do not know if the parasite caused the diarrhea or just came along for the ride.

This case shows how hard it is to diagnose gut problems in zoo animals. It also proves that cleaning habits matter a lot. Parks must track where bedding comes from and test waste often. Mixing species areas can spread hidden bugs. Better plans are needed to keep captive wildlife healthy.
