Backing the Unsung Heroes of Documentary Filmmaking

Selin Murat has taken over as the executive director of the IDFA Bertha Fund, stepping into a role previously held by Isabel Arrate Fernandez for 23 years. Murat, who has over 15 years of experience in the industry, finds her new position as a funder both interesting and challenging. Her first few months were hectic, involving multiple rounds of funding and extensive reading to select projects. The IDFA Bertha Fund supports documentary filmmakers from regions where funding and distribution are scarce. This year, 16 films supported by the fund are being showcased at the Dutch festival, including works from Ukraine, Palestine, Congo, and Sudan. These films often tackle complex issues and require long-term commitment, making them crucial in times of sociopolitical unrest. Murat acknowledges the constant struggle filmmakers face, especially in regions affected by conflict and oppression. The fund provides financial support and has launched special initiatives for Ukrainian and Palestinian filmmakers. The selection process focuses on artistry and the filmmaker's perspective, rather than just impact or sociopolitical issues. Looking ahead, Murat aims to support not just individual projects but also the structures and communities that sustain them. She envisions fostering sustainable connections with local communities to better understand and support their needs. This approach would ensure that the fund's impact is long-lasting and beneficial for the entire documentary filmmaking ecosystem.
