Lithuania's Vilnius Airport has been facing some unusual challenges lately. Weather balloons have been causing quite a stir, leading to the airport's temporary closure multiple times this month. This isn't just about weather, though. These balloons are suspected to be used by smugglers to transport contraband cigarettes into the country.
The Lithuanian government has a theory. They believe that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, isn't doing enough to stop these balloon smugglers. It's a bit of a diplomatic tussle, with Lithuania taking action by closing its border crossings with Belarus until the end of November.
The airport's management announced the latest closure on Facebook. They mentioned that the airspace was restricted due to a balloon or balloons heading towards the airport. Flights were suspended until 2110 GMT. This isn't the first time this has happened, and it might not be the last.
Lukashenko, on the other hand, has a different take. He calls the border closure a "crazy scam" and accuses the West of starting a hybrid war against Belarus and Russia. He believes this is leading to a new era of division, marked by barbed-wire borders.
It's a complex situation, with both sides blaming each other. The balloons keep flying, the airport keeps closing, and the diplomatic tension keeps rising. It's not just about the balloons anymore. It's about what they represent: a larger geopolitical conflict.
