At 72, legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick isn't retiring yet. Instead, he's taking on a new adventure in college football. Belichick recently became the new head coach at the University of North Carolina, a school with a special place in his heart. His father, Steve, was an assistant coach there in the 1950s, so this is a bit of a homecoming for Bill.
But why choose college football now? Belichick has had an incredible NFL career, winning six Super Bowls and being just 14 wins away from the all-time record held by Don Shula. He's been a candidate for future coaching roles, but those plans seem to be on hold for the next five years.
College football will bring new challenges for Belichick. The landscape has changed with rules around Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal. But Belichick is ready. He's always wanted to coach in college and thinks it's time to build a national power at UNC. He's not alone in this journey. He's brought in former NFL executive Michael Lombardi as the team's GM and former Browns coach Freddie Kitchens to his staff.
And he's got support off the field too. His girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, is excited about the move. She's a former college cheerleader and is already in the spirit, posting "We are onto Chapel Hill! " on her Instagram Story after Belichick's agreement with the Tar Heels was official. This isn't a quick stop for Belichick. He's in it for the long haul.
