Better Schools Today, Stronger Community Tomorrow
Anchorage, USASat Apr 04 2026
Alaska’s schools serve over 45, 000 students daily, yet many buildings date back to the 1950s and 60s. These aging facilities face problems like leaky roofs, outdated electrical systems, and limited accessibility. Proposition 1 puts this reality on the ballot, asking voters to approve upgrades that could transform learning environments across Anchorage.
The proposal tackles two big issues: safety and student readiness. First, security upgrades like controlled building access would help staff monitor who enters schools every day. At the same time, modernizing school kitchens moves districts away from processed meals wrapped in plastic, toward fresh foods cooked on-site—improving both health and the environment. These changes don’t just update infrastructure; they help students focus better in class.
Older schools like Bettye Davis East High, with its 50-year-old roof and failing electrical system, face real risks during power outages or extreme weather. Fixing these problems isn’t just about comfort—it’s about keeping students safe and classrooms operational. Similarly, Romig Middle School, built in 1961, needs a new roof, better insulation, and wheelchair-accessible entrances to meet modern standards. Without repairs, these buildings risk becoming harder to use, more expensive to maintain, and less safe for everyone inside.
Some argue that updating schools like Lake Otis—set to close as a neighborhood school—might not make sense. But the board’s decision to close three schools reflects declining enrollment, not a rejection of the buildings themselves. Lake Otis’s problems—like a failing roof and outdated wiring—have been listed in district plans since 2020. Delaying repairs has only increased costs. Now, funding repairs now could save millions later and give a new charter school a safe, functional space to operate.
Voters aren’t just deciding on buildings; they’re choosing what kind of community they want. Safe schools mean fewer emergencies, healthier students, and stronger neighborhoods. Proposition 1 isn’t just an investment in bricks and mortar—it’s an investment in the people who use them every day.
