Big names in sports and music rooting for South Carolina basketball
Phoenix, Arizona, USASat Apr 04 2026
South Carolina’s women’s basketball team isn’t just drawing crowds to the arena—they’re bringing in famous faces too. Players and coaches aren’t the only ones cheering from courtside; sometimes, well-known figures from sports and entertainment are spotted in the stands. The team, coached by Dawn Staley, has built a strong reputation, earning three national titles and a spot in this year’s Final Four.
When the Gamecocks face UConn—the undefeated number one seed—the competition will be intense. A win would send South Carolina to the championship game, where they could face Texas or UCLA. The stakes are high, with millions watching on TV. But beyond the basketball, South Carolina’s success has turned heads in unexpected places.
Athletes from other sports have shown up to support the team. Jalen Hurts, NFL quarterback, attended the 2024 championship. His connection to Staley, who grew up a Philadelphia Eagles fan, explains his presence. Then there’s Plies, the rapper, who celebrated the Gamecocks’ 2024 win by joining him on stage during a concert in Columbia. Country star Darius Rucker, an alum of the university, has cheered at multiple games and even threw a free concert for students after their 2022 title win.
On the coaching side, South Carolina’s football coach, Shane Beamer, is making the trip to Phoenix to watch his former basketball teammates in action. Social media buzzed with his announcement: “Heading to Arizona to watch Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks compete. ” Meanwhile, Nick Emmanwori, a rookie NFL player and former Gamecock football player, might also show up. He’s dating Raven Johnson, a key player on South Carolina’s basketball team, but hasn’t confirmed if he’ll attend.
The team’s performance this season proves they belong in the spotlight. With a 35-3 record, they’ve lost only three times—all to strong opponents like Oklahoma and Texas. Yet they’ve dominated elsewhere, including a perfect 38-0 run in 2024, a historic first for the program. Joyce Edwards, their leading scorer, averages nearly 20 points a game and once dropped 29 in a single matchup. That kind of skill makes it clear why so many people are invested in their success.
Beyond the Final Four, Rucker will perform at a campus festival in April, filling in where spring football was canceled due to stadium upgrades. While the basketball team battles for a title, the school keeps the energy high with live music and community events.
