A recent investigation has uncovered a significant flow of money from European billionaires into U. S. nonprofits. This money is being used to influence American politics and policies. The investigation found that five foreign "charities" have given nearly $2 billion to left-leaning nonprofits in the U. S. These nonprofits are involved in various activities, including climate change advocacy, litigation, and protests.
The investigation also found that these foreign billionaires are exploiting loopholes in U. S. laws to fund these nonprofits. While foreign nationals are not allowed to directly donate to U. S. political candidates, they can fund nonprofits that engage in political activities. This allows them to indirectly influence U. S. politics and policies.
The five foreign funders identified in the investigation are the Quadrature Climate Foundation (UK), KR Foundation (Denmark), Oak Foundation (Switzerland), Laudes Foundation (Switzerland), and Children's Investment Fund Foundation (UK). These foundations have given money to a wide range of U. S. nonprofits, including ClimateWorks Foundation, Growald Climate Fund, Grantham Foundation, Windward Fund, Sunrise Project, Center for International Environmental Law, Conservation Law Foundation, Oil Change International, Fossil Free Media, Environmental Law Institute, Community Change, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, New Venture Fund, NRDC, Tides Center, Pulitzer Center, Ceres, Community Initiatives, World Resources Institute, Energy Foundation China, Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development, and Environmental Defense Fund.
The investigation also found that some of these nonprofits are involved in activities that are opposed to the policies of President Trump. For example, Community Change, which received money from the Oak Foundation, has been involved in protests against Trump's crackdown on crime. This raises concerns about the influence of foreign money on U. S. politics and policies.
The investigation has sparked calls for policymakers to take action to address this issue. Americans for Public Trust, the organization that conducted the investigation, has urged policymakers to close loopholes in the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), require foreign-funded nonprofits to disclose their sources of funding, consider banning foreign financing of politically active 501(c)(4) organizations, and investigate whether foreign charities have violated U. S. laws through their advocacy or litigation.
