You might think that everyone who's been around sick cows is getting tested for bird flu. But that's not happening. A recent study found that some farm workers have been infected with H5N1 and didn't even know it! Farm workers are at a high risk because they're always around sick cows. But not everyone is getting tested. Some farmers don't want health officials on their property. Plus, many workers don't have health insurance or paid sick leave. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did some blood tests. Out of 115 farm workers, eight had signs of a recent H5N1 infection. Half remembered being sick when the cows were, but the other half didn't have any symptoms. This means there could be more cases we don't know about. The CDC is now recommending more tests, even for workers without symptoms. The goal is to catch these infections early and stop the virus from spreading. But it's not easy. Farmers might not always let officials in. Sometimes, it's too hot for workers to wear protective gear. And it can be hard for them to see a doctor quickly. The CDC is still learning about how many people might be infected. They've even tested veterinarians at a conference. The bottom line is that we need to keep watching this virus and do what we can to stop it.
