Bone Strength and Brain Health Link Found in Major Study

Researchers set out to explore whether weak bones could hint at brain aging issues. The study focused on how low bone mineral density might tie into changes in white matter and memory loss. Scientists used a smart computer tool to pull bone measurements from standard chest scans. This approach let them track how these physical metrics shifted over time alongside brain health tests.

The group analyzed data from nearly eight hundred participants across different ethnic backgrounds. The average age was around seventy-nine years, with nearly four hundred ninety-seven men and three hundred eighteen women. The deep learning system measured spinal bone density at the very beginning of the study. Then researchers followed the group for several years to watch for changes.

When they compared everyone, those with lower starting bone density showed quicker drops in white matter quality. Specifically, the front part of the internal capsule and the main connecting bridge of the brain both worsened faster. These brain regions are important for communication between different areas. The study also found that people with weaker bones tended to experience sharper declines in overall thinking skills. However, some results didn't hold up strongly when scientists checked for statistical noise.
