Boosting Skills and Sleep in Autistic Kids Through Activity

WorldTue Sep 01 2026

Researchers looked at dozens of earlier meta‑analyses on exercise for autistic children and teens. They combined the results to see how physical activity affects different skills. The combined effect size was about 0.58, showing a clear positive impact.

Kids got better at moving their bodies and sleeping more soundly. These two areas showed the biggest gains. Changes in thinking and memory were noticeably smaller.

Activities done outside, like running or playing with balls, gave the strongest boost. Water‑based classes, dancing, or expressive movement did not show clear benefits. Choosing the right type of activity can shape the outcome.

The analysis also found that studies published later tended to report larger effects. This may reflect newer designs, better study quality, or shifting trends. Exercise looks like a promising, non‑drug way to support many areas of growth in autistic youth. Still, more research is required to lock in the best practices.
