Boston is facing a heated debate as the school district considers shutting down three schools. The plan has ignited strong emotions among parents, teachers, and students, who are fighting to keep these schools open.
The schools at risk are The Community Academy of Science and Health, Another Course to College, and the Lee Academy Pilot School. If closed, around 2, 300 students will be affected. Many parents argue that these schools are vital, especially for special education students and communities of color.
During a recent school committee meeting, over 100 people shared their concerns. One man stated, "You can't just close a school and expect everything to be fine. Kids need real solutions, not just excuses. " Another pointed out that closing schools with mostly Black and Brown students, many of whom are multilingual or have disabilities, is unfair.
A woman urged the committee to focus on safety and keeping schools open, saying, "Instead of closing schools, find a way to make them better. " Her words were met with loud applause.
School officials claim the closures are necessary due to lower enrollment after the pandemic. They estimate savings of $15 million to $20 million. However, the community is not convinced. They want assurance that their children's education will not suffer.
The final decision will be made at the next school committee meeting on December 17. Until then, the debate continues, highlighting the tension between budget cuts and educational equity.
