The central and eastern U. S. is in for a frosty December, thanks to a shifting polar vortex. This weather pattern is expected to bring three rounds of Arctic air, starting this week. The first wave is already hitting the Midwest, with temperatures dropping significantly. The cold snap will spread to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic by Friday.
Meteorologists predict two more blasts of frigid air in the coming weeks. The polar vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air around the Earth's poles, is expanding. This allows Arctic air to move southward along the jet stream. The second cold outbreak is expected next week, with a third round likely in the middle of the month.
Temperatures are expected to plummet, challenging daily record lows in some areas. The Midwest can expect lows in the negative single digits and teens, while the northern Mid-Atlantic and New England may see single digits and teens. Along the Interstate 95 Northeast corridor, temperatures will drop into the 10s and 20s. Subzero temperatures are expected from the Dakotas to Nebraska.
To stay safe during this cold snap, it's important to winterize your home and have your heating systems checked. If you lose power, avoid using generators, grills, or camp stoves indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use your oven or stove to heat your home. Instead, use battery-powered lanterns or flashlights to avoid fire risks. Close off unused rooms and use caution with fireplaces and space heaters.
If you must go outside, dress warmly to avoid frostbite. Wear layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing, a hat, mittens, and a scarf or ski mask to cover your face. Water-resistant boots can help keep your feet dry. Avoid overexertion, as it can lead to serious medical conditions.
