Brain Bang: How Scientists Are Tracking Concussion Recovery in Real Time

When someone gets a concussion, their body sometimes struggles to regulate itself automatically. Things like heart rate, heart rate variability, and how pupils react to light can all get thrown off. This is called autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and researchers now think it might be the key to understanding concussion symptoms better.

A new study called ANSWERS is trying to crack this puzzle. The project stands for Autonomic Nervous System in Warfighters Following Exertion and Resting Stressors. Scientists behind this research noticed that previous concussion studies had problems. Many used tiny groups of people, handled data differently, or failed to account for outside factors that could skew results. ANSWERS wants to fix those issues.

The study has two main goals. First, researchers are checking 150 people split between military service members and college club athletes. They measure autonomic nervous system activity while participants rest and exercise. They also run tests on balance, thinking skills, vision, and symptoms. The second goal follows 50 athletes who actually got concussions. Each one gets matched with a healthy control of the same age, sex, and sport. Both groups get tested at three specific moments: right after injury, when symptoms disappear, and shortly after doctors clear them to return to activity.

Funding started in August 2023, with recruitment beginning just three months later. The team plans to keep enrolling participants until mid-2027. As of mid-2026, they have brought in 122 volunteers out of their 250-person target. That puts them slightly past the halfway mark. Data collection continues as teams work toward sharing their final results in late 2027. The ultimate aim is to create reliable ways to measure concussion recovery using the body own regulation systems.
