Breaking Down Barriers in Regional Australia

South Western Sydney and rural/regional areas of AustraliaWed Aug 12 2026

Families living in multicultural and regional/rural communities of Australia often struggle to access social and healthcare services. This can lead to unmet social care needs that have a significant impact on their lives. A recent study aimed to explore the factors that contribute to these unmet needs and the role of parental mental health in families from these communities.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from a randomised controlled trial conducted among parents/carers of children from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities of South Western Sydney and rural/regional communities of Murrumbidgee. The researchers used a survey called the WE CARE survey to measure the level of unmet social care needs. They found that 61% of the 288 participants reported having one or more unmet needs.

The study identified several factors that are associated with higher rates of unmet needs. These include parental mental distress, child developmental concerns, CALD status, lower levels of parental education, and marital status. The researchers also found that families in the intervention group had a significantly lower rate of unmet needs over time compared with the control group.

The study highlights the need for targeted support and services for families from multicultural and regional/rural communities. By addressing the underlying factors that contribute to unmet social care needs, we can help break down the barriers that prevent these families from accessing the support they need.
