In a world where speedrunning is a spectator sport, the 2025 edition of Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) didn’t disappoint. Over seven days, the event raised millions for the Prevent Cancer Foundation and showcased some unique performances. Speedrunners didn’t just race for the fastest times; they also incorporated live music, making it part performance art.
Imagine playing games with controllers strapped to your head and foot while playing a piano. That’s what Wes, aka FunkopotamusWes, did during his New Super Mario Bros. Wii run. A standing ovation followed his 41-minute performance.
Opera and gaming collided when Xem, a trained opera singer, sang after his Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando run. The audience was on their feet again.
The wildest performance might have been Dr. Doot playing Elden Ring with an electronic saxophone. He tried to beat bosses without being hit, using his breath to control the game. While he didn’t finish unharmed, the feat was astonishing and hilarious.
Crazy Taxi’s return was unique. Chuckles825 played the game muted with a live band providing the soundtrack. The audience didn’t stand for an ovation but to dance.
AGDQ 2025 was full of inventive runs, like a randomized Super Metroid race and a shared controller Zelda run. Adding live music or instruments showcased the community’s creativity. It’s impressive to see speedruns enhanced with musical performances.
