Bronx Police Reorganize to Fight Rising Gun Violence

Bronx, New York, USAThu May 21 2026
The Bronx has split its police operations into two commands, North and South, a move aimed at handling the borough’s record 911 call volume. The change follows last year’s data, showing nearly one million emergency calls in the Bronx—more than any other borough. Police chief said the single command structure could not keep up with growing demands, so the new setup will assign dedicated homicide and evidence teams to each region. North Command will operate out of the 48th Precinct, covering precincts 46 through 52. South Command will use the renovated former 40th Precinct, overseeing precincts 40 to 45. Over 200 extra officers are slated for deployment in the Bronx, without pulling resources from other boroughs.
The city’s summer violence reduction plan will see 2, 500 officers spread across 72 hotspots. Deployments focus on evenings and overnight hours when shootings spike, placing more officers in parks, beaches, and neighborhoods most affected. Early results show a 41% drop in major crime at pilot sites like Coney Island and Prospect Park. Despite overall crime declines, recent incidents have highlighted the danger to children: a five‑year‑old was grazed by a bullet, a 15‑year‑old was fatally shot in a park fight, and a seven‑month‑old died from a stray bullet. These tragedies underscore the urgency of increased police presence and preventive measures. Mayor Mamdani expressed hope that these actions will translate into safer schools and fuller dinner tables, beyond just statistics.
