California Housing Crisis: Local Rules Blocking Affordable Homes

California has some of the most expensive houses in the country. Most families can't even picture themselves owning a typical home. The issue goes beyond just high prices. Local rules keep blocking new construction projects. Strict zoning and building codes make it tough for builders to create enough homes.

Two candidates are running for the 70th Assembly District. They both want to tackle the housing mess. But they have different views on how to help. Tri Ta and Paula Swift both believe local control is important. Still, both of them strongly oppose big state mandates that limit how much housing gets built.

Senate Bill 79 tried to lift those limits. It could unlock hundreds of thousands of new homes across major cities. When cities like Austin, Texas eased their rules, rents dropped quickly. That proves loosening restrictions can work. But the bill faces resistance from local leaders who don't want change.

Local governments often create more problems than they solve. Many elected officials in places like Westminster have proven to be ineffective. Without stronger state action, the housing shortage keeps getting worse. Families remain stuck in costly markets for years.
