You’re a senior in Texas battling cancer and suddenly you find out you might have to switch doctors. Well, that’s what’s happening to many folks relying on Medicare Advantage or managed Medicaid services. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas decided to drop MD Anderson Cancer Center from their in-network list. This means all the doctors at MD Anderson, one of the world’s best cancer centers, will no longer be covered by these plans starting November 1st.
Now, you might be wondering what took them so long? The change is happening this year, but Blue Cross Blue Shield says it was a tough call they had to make. They want to keep healthcare costs under control while still providing quality care. But the change will affect both seniors on Medicare and low-income Texans on Medicaid. Some patients might still get in-network rates if they have special cases, like being pregnant or having a serious illness.
MD Anderson is dealing with this too. They’re working with patients to find new doctors during their treatments. They’re also trying to stay in the network, but for now, only certain parts of Medicare and Medicaid will be covered there.
It’s not all doom and gloom. Some people say this is a chance to think about how you want your healthcare to work. Traditional Medicare with a supplement could be a good option if you want more freedom to choose your doctors. But it might cost more.
This isn’t the first time Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas has had issues with their Medicare Advantage plans. Another provider almost pulled out too, but they managed to sign a new deal just in time.
