You might have heard that smoking or eating cannabis while pregnant is not a good idea. Well, new research from Nationwide Children's Hospital is shedding even more light on why it's important to avoid cannabis during pregnancy. They found that kids who were exposed to cannabis before birth had a tougher time controlling their emotions, paying attention, and planning things out. Plus, they were more likely to behave aggressively. This isn't new news — other studies have shown similar results. But with cannabis being stronger today and more people using it, these findings are even more important.
Experts are worried because cannabis is legal in many places and it's easy to get. They want pregnant women to know there are safer ways to deal with pregnancy symptoms like nausea, sleep problems, and stress. Instead of turning to cannabis, it's best to talk to a doctor about safer alternatives. Major health organizations also advise against using cannabis while pregnant.
The study looked at lots of kids and their behaviors. They used various tests to check how well kids could control their impulses, pay attention, solve problems, and manage their emotions. Kids who were exposed to cannabis before birth had a harder time with these skills, and they were more aggressive in a play setting.
Dr. Sarah Keim, who led the study, said the results aren't surprising. They add to what we already know and show that cannabis can have serious effects on kids, especially with today's stronger versions. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists warn against using cannabis while pregnant because of the risks to both moms and kids.
So, what do you think? Should cannabis be off-limits during pregnancy? What are some safer alternatives you've heard of?
