Despite the ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, the pursuit of a ceasefire in Gaza remains active, as reported by the White House this week.
The Associated Press revealed that the recent skirmishes have yet to disrupt the ceasefire negotiations taking place in Cairo, Egypt, amidst the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas militants. John Kirby, White House National Security spokesperson, confirmed on Monday that there was no impact on the Cairo talks and expressed relief over this development.
Kirby further disclosed that significant progress had been made during four separate conversations on Sunday in Cairo, with negotiators working diligently to 'flesh out' a plan that would secure the release of hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
A ceasefire is widely perceived as the most viable option to prevent a broader regional conflict. Hezbollah has threatened retaliation against Israel for the killing of senior commander Fuad Shukr last month, while Iran has vowed revenge for the recent assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. However, both parties have raised concerns over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's desire to maintain Israeli military forces in Gaza.
The Gaza war erupted after Hamas instigated an attack against Israel last October, resulting in 1,250 fatalities. The Gaza Health Ministry announced earlier this month that the Palestinian death toll had surpassed 40,000 since the conflict's inception.
As the war continues, there have been persistent appeals for peace in Gaza and across the Middle East. U. S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced earlier this month that Israel had agreed to a U. S. -backed proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza. Blinken stated, 'In a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu today, he confirmed to me that Israel supports the bridging proposal. The next important step is for Hamas to say 'yes. ''
However, Egypt, which has been instrumental in the ceasefire discussions, informed the AP that Hamas was dubious about the ceasefire, primarily due to concerns over Israel's commitment to withdrawing troops from Gaza. An Egyptian official, speaking anonymously, stated, 'The Americans are offering promises, not guarantees. . . Hamas won't accept this, because it virtually means Hamas will release the civilian hostages in return for a six-week pause of fighting with no guarantees for a negotiated permanent cease-fire. ' On Monday, Kirby confirmed that Brett McGurk, a Middle East adviser for the White House, was leading discussions in Cairo but is expected to depart the depart the country soon.
