Federal immigration agents have started making arrests in Charlotte, North Carolina, causing fear among residents and criticism from local leaders. The surge in enforcement began without prior announcement, leaving many people unsure of what to expect. Local officials, including Mayor Vi Lyles, have spoken out against the actions, stating that they create unnecessary fear and uncertainty.
Crime rates in Charlotte have actually decreased this year, with homicides, rapes, robberies, and motor vehicle thefts all down by more than 20%. However, the Trump administration has used the tragic stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee on a light-rail train to argue that Democratic-led cities are not doing enough to protect residents. The man charged with the murder has a lengthy criminal record.
Residents have reported seeing increased activity from Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Willy Aceituno, a U. S. citizen born in Honduras, was stopped twice by Border Patrol agents while on his way to work. During the second encounter, agents broke his car window, forced him out of the vehicle, and threw him to the ground. After showing documents proving his citizenship, Aceituno was released. He later filed a police report over the broken glass.
Local businesses have also been affected by the crackdown. JD Mazuera Arias, a City Council member, reported that some businesses have closed out of fear. Rheba Hamilton, a resident who witnessed agents approaching workers in her front yard, described the situation as "disconcerting" and an "abuse of our laws. "
The Trump administration has defended the enforcement operations as necessary for fighting crime and enforcing immigration laws. However, critics argue that the operations are causing more harm than good. Democratic Gov. Josh Stein has urged people to record any inappropriate behavior and notify local law enforcement. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has emphasized that it is not involved in federal immigration enforcement.
