ChatGPT Hits $1 Billion Ad Revenue in Just 200 Days

World, with major presence in EU, US, India, Middle East, North AfricaTue Sep 01 2026

ChatGPT's advertising business reached $1 billion in annualized revenue in about 200 days. That is faster than Google's early ad growth. OpenAI shared this news on Monday. The company also expects $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year.

The ad system started with a pilot in February. It now runs in over 40 countries. Free users and Go plan members see these ads. A self-serve platform launched Monday for marketers in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

OpenAI says ads are labeled and separate from answers. Advertisers cannot access private chats. The company's total revenue run rate passed $40 billion, roughly double its 2025 end.

On the same day, the European Commission called ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine. This is the first time an AI chatbot got this label. It means ChatGPT must follow strict rules under the Digital Services Act.

To qualify, a service needs over 45 million EU users monthly. OpenAI reported 159.1 million monthly EU users. That is more than triple the limit. Compliance is due by December. Fines can reach 6% of global revenue.

This user count is legally required. Other AI audience numbers come from marketing teams. This one has real consequences if wrong. It shows ChatGPT's scale in Europe, where regulation is tough.

Advertising helped Google become hugely profitable. Now the same model is growing under ChatGPT much faster. Selling Alphabet stock after this news is risky. Google still dominates search ads.

But ChatGPT shows a new player can monetize queries quickly. The real fight is for ad budgets outside traditional search. Brand and discovery ads now live on social media and retail sites.

Watch three things: Can OpenAI hit $2.5 billion in ad revenue? Will Google's paid clicks slow down? And where will brand ad spending go next?
