Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor J. B. Pritzker have been making headlines for their strong stance against federal immigration enforcement. They've taken steps to limit the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents within their state. Johnson recently signed an executive order creating "ICE Free Zones, " which restricts federal agents from using city property to enforce immigration laws. Meanwhile, Pritzker has been vocal in his criticism of ICE, even signing an order to document what he calls "unlawful attacks" by federal agents.
Critics argue that these actions shield criminals and put both federal agents and the public at risk. An ICE agent has accused both Johnson and Pritzker of obstructing justice and creating a dangerous environment. Pritzker has also been accused of playing the "race card, " claiming that ICE is targeting Black and brown communities. However, statistics show that most illegal immigrants come from Mexico, Central, and South America, not from white communities.
The media often fails to challenge Democrats when they make inflammatory remarks, such as comparing Trump supporters to Nazis. This lack of scrutiny raises questions about the media's credibility and integrity. Pritzker, for instance, donated to a campaign of a Democratic candidate who made disturbing comments about harming Republicans. Neither Pritzker nor other prominent Democrats have urged this candidate to step down.
In California, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also made controversial statements. She suggested that police should arrest ICE agents if they break California law. This remark was swiftly condemned by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who urged Pelosi and other officials to prioritize the safety of their citizens.
The actions of Johnson, Pritzker, and Pelosi have drawn comparisons to Southern segregationist Democrats who resisted federal anti-segregation laws. Federal law makes it a crime to obstruct federal officers, so the question remains: Will the Department of Justice take action against these politicians? It's crucial for the DOJ to send a strong message and hold these leaders accountable before their rhetoric leads to harmful consequences.
