Chicago's festive Christmas tree lighting event took a grim turn when gunfire erupted downtown, leaving one person dead and eight teenagers hurt. The shootings happened near the Chicago Theater, just after 9:50 p. m. on Friday night. Seven young people, aged 13 to 17, were rushed to the hospital. Most were in good shape, but a 13-year-old was in fair condition.
Cops on patrol nearby heard the shots and found seven people injured. Videos showed crowds running for cover, some ducking into a subway entrance. Police were quick to respond, but no one was arrested by Saturday morning.
About 50 minutes later, another shooting happened just five blocks away. Two men were hit, one died, and an 18-year-old was in serious condition. The city was bustling with holiday decorations and crowds for the tree lighting ceremony, which ended before the violence started.
This isn't the first time Chicago has seen such incidents. In October, a gunshot was fired during a massive teen brawl in Oak Park. Back in August, a shooting at a party in the Austin neighborhood left one dead and five injured. These events raise questions about safety and security in public spaces, especially during large gatherings.
Meanwhile, President Trump's push to send National Guard troops to tackle crime and immigration has hit roadblocks in the courts. The recent shootings add fuel to the ongoing debate about crime prevention and community safety.
