This week, China’s military staged huge war games around Taiwan, causing lots of worry. Troops did drills by sea, land, and air, even using one of China’s aircraft carriers. Taiwan's government said China should respect their democracy and stop these scare tactics. The drills were a reply to Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te’s speech last week that China shouldn’t control them. China’s government sees Taiwan as part of their country, but Lai said Taiwan isn’t subordinate to China and isn’t represented by them.
Taiwan, earlier known as the Republic of China, split from mainland China after the Communist revolution in 1949. While the world mostly accepts China’s rule over the mainland, Taiwan’s situation remains fuzzy. They have some allies, but none officially support their full independence.
The United States didn’t like these drills and called for China to be careful. The U. S. has a mixed stance on Taiwan, supporting China’s rule but also Taiwan’s right to self-govern.
These drills aren’t just a show of force; they're a message that China expects Taiwan to act a certain way. But Taiwan's not ready to drop their democratic system to fit China’s views.
