China's electric vehicle (EV) industry has been a global game-changer, dominating both domestic and international markets. However, a recent shift in policy might slow down this rapid growth. The Chinese government has decided not to include EVs in their strategic industries list for the upcoming five-year plan (2026-2030). This is a big deal because it's the first time in over a decade that EVs haven't been on this list. Analysts see this as a sign that the government is ready to let market forces take the wheel, instead of providing heavy state support. At home, this change is expected to lead to a much-needed cleanup in the EV sector. With over 150 car producers, the market is quite crowded. The subsidy cuts might help reduce this number and make the industry more efficient. Globally, Chinese EVs have been flooding markets, often at discounted prices. This has made it tough for other carmakers to compete. But with the expected drop in Chinese EV production and exports, other countries might see new opportunities to grow. Let's take a look at where Chinese EVs have been selling the most. Over the first nine months of 2025, China exported EVs to over 200 countries and territories, earning nearly $48 billion. Belgium was the top destination, buying around $5 billion worth of Chinese EVs. Other big buyers include Brazil, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. Europe has been the largest market for Chinese EVs, buying about half of all exports since 2018. In 2025, Europe imported around $20 billion worth of Chinese EVs. Other Asian countries are the next largest segment, buying around $12. 5 billion this year. Interestingly, Africa has shown the largest year-over-year growth in Chinese EV imports, with a 184% surge from January to September 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. While this is still small compared to Europe, it's a significant increase. Despite needing to discount prices in some markets, Chinese EV exports have been quite successful. Fourteen countries have spent over a billion dollars on Chinese EVs so far in 2025. This wide range of markets could be a great opportunity for other carmakers if Chinese EV exports decrease.
