In a tense situation in Pakistan, four security officers were killed when Imran Khan’s supporters broke through barricades in the capital, Islamabad. The protesters, who want Khan’s release from jail and a change in the government due to alleged election fraud, clashed with law enforcement. The interior ministry reported that vehicles from the protesters' convoy ran over the paramilitary officers. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif labeled the protest as extremism, not peaceful.
Residents of Islamabad, like Farooq Khan, felt the city became a battlefield as educational institutions and markets closed for days. Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, and Ali Amin Gandapur, chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, led the march. They urged supporters to peacefully head towards the Red Zone, where key government buildings are located.
Imran Khan, once a cricket star and former prime minister, has been jailed for over a year after losing his position in April 2022. He was convicted in a corruption case and later for revealing secrets. Despite facing over 150 criminal cases, Khan and his party remain popular.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) wanted a sit-in protest demanding Khan’s release and reversal of constitutional changes they deemed harmful to the judiciary. Security forces tried to block the march, using shipping containers and tear gas to disperse crowds. A court had banned rallies in Islamabad, with thousands of Khan supporters arrested and internet services suspended.
The PTI uses social media and messaging platforms like WhatsApp to mobilize supporters. However, the X platform is banned in Pakistan, even with a VPN. Some PTI leaders negotiated with the government, which offered a designated area for protests, but the offer was rejected. The government deployed army troops to reinforce security, particularly in the Red Zone.
The escalating tensions signify a polarized political climate in Pakistan. While authorities maintain that only courts can release Khan, the PTI views his cases as politically motivated.
