Brazil is stepping in to help poorer nations attend the COP30 climate summit. With just a week to go, many countries still don't have a place to stay. The host country is offering free cabins on cruise ships to ensure everyone can participate. Belem, the city hosting the event, usually has limited hotel options. This has driven up prices, making it hard for some nations to afford. Around 50, 000 delegates are expected, but the city only has about 18, 000 hotel beds. Brazil wants to make sure all voices are heard, especially from the poorest and most climate-vulnerable countries. High costs had already caused concerns, with some nations warning they might not be able to attend. The U. N. even held emergency meetings to address this issue. A leaked email revealed Brazil's plan to offer free cabins on cruise ships. These cabins are funded by private donors and a development bank. The U. N. climate secretariat sent the email, stating the cabins would be free for low-income nations. COP30 president Andre Correa do Lago confirmed the cabins would go to African countries, small island states, and the least developed countries. This move aims to support around 96 nations in total. Even some wealthier European countries are considering skipping the summit due to high accommodation costs. Prices have exceeded $500 per person per night, making it a tough decision for many. Brazil's effort is a critical step to ensure all nations can participate in the climate talks. It highlights the challenges of hosting such a large event in a city with limited housing options.
