Closing the Gap in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

CanadaTue Aug 11 2026

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is a rapidly growing field that's expanding faster than the development of research-backed guidelines. This creates a problem: practitioners might rely on guidance that's not transparent, evidence-based, or rigorously tested. As a result, safety and ethics can vary greatly.

In response, a team developed a competency framework over four years through a quality improvement process. They worked with a post-graduate program at a Canadian university, incorporating feedback from learners, faculty, and practice partners. The framework focuses on both technical skills and relational presence, with a code of ethics addressing safety, confidentiality, transparency, and more.

The framework is divided into five competency domains: therapeutic presence, cultural awareness, historical and regulatory knowledge, evidence-based clinical skills, and trauma-informed practice. It's not a fixed standard, but rather a flexible guide for practitioners to ensure they're providing the best possible care.
