In Shanxi, China, coal mining is a big deal. It's a major industry, but it comes with hidden dangers. Two naturally occurring elements, uranium and thorium, can be released into the environment through mining activities. These elements can pose health risks, so a study was conducted to check their levels in coal miners and nearby residents.
The study collected urine and hair samples from 51 people. Out of these, 30 were coal miners, and 21 were local residents. The levels of uranium and thorium in these samples were measured using a special tool called an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer.
The results showed that both miners and residents had higher levels of uranium and thorium than usual. This suggests that both occupational and environmental exposure is happening. Interestingly, uranium levels were higher in miners, especially those who had been working for a shorter time. This could mean that their exposure is recent or ongoing.
On the other hand, thorium levels didn't vary much between miners and residents. This suggests that thorium exposure is more uniform across the region. The study highlights the need for more research into the long-term health effects of these elements. It also calls for measures to reduce exposure risks in coal mining areas.
